Mitochondrial respiration as measured by the activity of succinate dehydrogenase (respiratory complex II) was found to be augmented by interferon (IFN)-gamma in mouse peritoneal cells. The in vitro enhancing effect was inhibited by polysubstituted pyrimidine derivatives. It was suggested that pyrimidines interfere with IFN-gamma signaling pathways, notably with the expression of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3).
