The effect of lobeline on two model types of nicotinic receptors was studied using the patch-clamp technique. Our results show that lobeline inhibits responses to acetylcholine in human embryonic muscle alpha beta gamma delta receptor naturally expressed in TE671 cells in a pseudo-noncompetitive manner. On the neuronal alpha3beta4 nicotinic receptor expressed in COS cells the effect of lobeline is more complex and depends on the concentration of the agonist acetylcholine
