Purinergic P2X receptors are membrane cation-permeable channels that open in response to the binding of extracellular ATP (adenosine 5’-triphosphate). Currently there is a growing interest in studying effects of extracellular ATP, its receptors and the possibilities of therapeutic use of purinergic compounds. It has been shown that purinergic intercellular signaling is an important mechanism involved in initiation and transmission of pain, in inflammatory processes, regulation of synaptic transmission, contraction of smooth muscles, and many other processes. The following text is focused on the role of P2X receptors in transmission of pain, particularly in pathogenesis of chronic neuropathic pain
