Preparation and characterization of Bioglass® porous scaffold reinforced by a homogeneous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coating and/or by composite coating consisting of PVA and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) dispersion is discussed in the work. Resulting scaffolds exhibited 3D interconnected structure with high degree of open porosity (45 PPI, 90% of open porosity). The coating was obtained by dipping the samples into an aqueous solution of PVA and/or PVA containing MFC. Compressive and tensile tests, according to a new testing methodology optimized for highly porous brittle ceramics were carried out. The effectiveness of a PVA/MFC composite coating as reinforcement for bioactive glass based scaffolds has been proven by mechanical and microstructural characterization.
