The aim of the work was to reinforce amorphous borosilicate glass matrix by Boron Nitride Nanosheets(BNNSs). BNNSs were prepared using liquid exfoliation method and characterized by TEM, SEM, FT-IR, TGA analysis. The average length of nanosheets was found to be 0.5 to 1 µm and the thickness of the nanosheets was usually less than 5-10 layers. These were used to synthesize Borosilicate(BS) glass composites with different loading concentrations(1, 2.5 and 5 wt%). Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) was used for the sintering process to avoid structural damages to BNNS and/or crystallisation during high temperature processing. BNNS were found to be evenly distributed and aligned in the BS glass matrix in perpendicular direction to the applied force in SPS. Mechanical properties including fracture toughness, elastic modulus and hardness were measured and the effect of BNNS loading on BS glass matrix was investigated. Toughening mechanisms were thoroughly investigated by SEM and confocal microscopy.
