Self-assembly (SA) using microspheres as building blocks is a topic of intense scientific interest in recent years. The combination of self-assembly with nanofabrication techniques (evaporation, deposition, etching, etc.) is commonly used for the fabrication of nanostructures in a range of materials. This review briefly describes several techniques for the homogenous spreading of the monodisperse microspheres over the substrate, such as drop-coating, dip-coating, spin-coating and self-assembly at the gas-liquid interface. These self-assembled monolayers with close-packed ordering are used as the primary templates for microsphere lithography.
