Carbon-based materials due to their biocompatibility and other exceptional properties are promising materials for bioelectrical applications and for biomedicine. These applications include implants, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine and sensorics. In this paper, the current state of the neuron studies on carbon materials is discussed. We point out (i) the role of film morphology, (ii) surface structuring and (iii) surface functionalization as factors which promote proliferation and differentiation of neural stem cells.
