Wood load-jacking and pin-pushing are new methods currently in development for directly obtaining values for the mechanical characteristics of wood members in situ.. Historic wood members under evaluation will normally be in service at the time of testing and existing stresses will be present. The content of this paper aims to evaluate the influence of residual stress present due to service load and its impacts on the effectiveness of each method to determine wood compressive strength and modulus of deformation. The device for each method is used in tests completed on a full-scale, loaded member in a laboratory, and the results are then critically compared with results from previous experiments on unloaded samples. Relations for wood strength between the loaded and unloaded condition are assessed for each method’s success and practical use in historic wood applications.
