The conference analyzed the conflicting interpretations of the Great War as a climax of the longer crisis of European development on one hand and as a start of the catastrophic 20th century on the other. Geographically it focused on a broadly defined central European space, i. e. on the German speaking areas of Europe together with other parts of the Habsburg Empire.
