The Rock Quality Designation index (RQD) developed by Deere et al. [1] represents one of the basic parameters which enter into the calculation of rock mass quality by index rock mass classification systems RMR [2, 3] and Q [4]. The RQD is defined as the percentage of the sum of the lengths of intact core pieces longer than 100mm (4 inches) relative to the chosen length of evaluated drill core and originally, it was also defined for the purpose of rock mass quality classification. However, RQD is a single parameter value, which directionally depends on the borehole orientation towards the bedding or metamorphic foliation and reflects a rate of rock mass failure only stated on the basis of drill core fragmentation by discontinuities.
