Morphology of mesoporous poly(divinylbenzenes) prepared at so called hydrothermal conditions when monomers were dilluted with 10-times greater volume of porogene solvent (tetrahydrofuran with 0 – 20 % water) was studied both in dry-state (nitrogen adsorption/desorption) and swollen-state (inverse steric exclusion chromatography). There was found that pore volume in the polymer examined just after preparation corresponded to the volume of the porogene used. Such high porosity can be explained only on the base of pore formation through microsyneresis and not by macrosyneresis mechanism common in synthesis of conventional porous polymer materials. Drying of course induces a pore collapse and the addition of water to the porogene influences ability of the polymer to regain the original pore volume by re-swelling in tetrahydrofuran.
