Based on documentary sources climate variability and hydrometeorological extremes of the 16th century in the Czech Lands are analysed. Types of documentary sources are characterised, the most important of them with more details. Weather in individual years from AD 1501 to 1600 is described. Series of temperature and precipitation indices interpreted from documentary sources were used for temperature and precipitation reconstructions. Hydrometeorological extremes (floods, strong winds, convective phenomena, early and late frosts, drought, "bloody" rain and ball lightning), other phenomena (locust, landslides, earthquakes) and impact on viticulture were analysed.
