The topside-sounders of the International Satellites for Ionospheric Studies (ISIS) program have produced a wealth of information about the topside ionosphere and the database established by these satellites is the premier resource for ionospheric topside modeling. The electron-density prole in the widely used International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model depends heavily on this data source. So fare, however, most of this knowledge and input has come from the hand-scaled component of this data base. This involves identifying the x- and o-traces on the ionogram and inverting them into an electron-density prole. Software, known as the TOPside Ionogram Scalar with True-height (TOPIST) algorithm has been developed for the automatic scaling and inversion of the ionogram and has been applied to more than 100,000 ISIS-2 digital topside ionograms.
