Diamond electronic and biological properties can be tailored by grafting individual atoms or molecules to its surface. Diamond surface varies from highly insulating to electrically conducting by a simple change from oxygen to hydrogen termination. Moreover, this molecular termination influences not only i ts electronic properties, but also the surface wettability, surface potential, electron affinity, adsorption of molecules, etc. All these factors are important for further usage of diamond as a funct ional material for fabrication of biosensors or artificial substrates used in regenerative medicine. Here, we discuss some technological issues related to grafting of atoms or molecules to the diamond surface. Advanced diamond-based optical elements are pointed out with their potential use in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
