Fluorescent nano-diamonds (fND) are becoming increasingly attractive tool for biological cellular imaging. Biomedical applications of fNDs require specific particle size, which is for example different for endosomatic penetration of fNDs through cellular membrane as for a penetration of fND to cell nucleus for which ultra-small fND is required. Luminescence in such fNDs depends not only on the number and type of the colour centres and their charge but also on the fND size. Size effect is of importance especially for very small particles. In this work we concentrate on such size dependence of photoluminescence (PL) properties of fNDs including quantum size effects that can be chemically controlled.
