Developments in the field of visible light photoredox catalysis have considerably enriched toolbox of preparative organic chemists in recent years. This fast growing area of research has emerged after seminal studies mainly by MacMillan, Yoon, and Stephenson groups were published in 2008 and 2009. This chapter focuses on the 20th century roots of photoredox catalysis with [Ru(bpy)3]2+, and the key properties of this species are briefly summarized.
