Using gridded data of precipitation totals with the step of 5 degrees covering the European area, trends in each cell have been determined. In general, precipitation totals for the whole Europe increased in the course of the century, though this increase is not significant. This change depends on the geographic latitude. In lower latitudes (under 50 degrees), precipitation totals decreased during the same period, whereas in higher latitudes they increased and these increases are more pronounced in latitudes higher than 60 degrees. Less apparent is the dependence on the geographic longitude: the increase is a little stronger in the western regions. All these trends do not appear in summer precipitation totals whereas for winter totals they are more pronounced. In some cells, small deviations from this rule may occur, but the gross character of the distribution of localities with different precipitation change seems to be clear. It is claimed that this trend will continue in the future and it will have an in fluence on the agricultural production.
