Smith’s main argument consists of repudiating the commonly held view of a sudden demise of British influence in the Middle East after 1956. Using secondary sources, the review examines the above thesis. The review pays special attention to an analysis of Smith’s treatment of the relevant issues, such as the British stance on the Suez crisis of 1956, Mosaddeq crisis in Iran in 1951-53 or the Arab-Israel conflict.
