Coal and Peat Fires: A Global Perspective is a compelling collection of research conducted by scientists and engineers around the world. It presents the scientific and industrial communities as well as the interested lay reader with studies about prehistoric as well as historic coal and peat fires and magnificent illustrations from countries around the world-a totally new contribution to science. The second of four volumes in the collection, Photographs and Multimedia Tours features stunning photographs from around the worldIn the Czech Republic (CR), coal has been mined for about 200 years. Coal deposits and mining activities are dominant in the vicinity of agricultural and/or industrial regions. Figure CZ 1 shows the locations of the major coal deposits in the Czech Republic. For the photo tour section of this chapter, four important locations (I - IV) of burning coal-waste piles and/or coal seams were selected (Figure CZ 1) to serve as examples of coal fires and coal-waste fires in the CR. Although a description of all four localities is given, only photos from location I are presented here. Photos from locations II, III, and IV are available on the companion Elsevier website for this book (http://booksite.elsevier.com/9780444594129).
