The paper is aimed at analysis of a five-phase induction machine. Simulation results based on a detailed mathematical model are presented as well as experimental ones for various voltage supply conditions. It is shown that especially the third symmetrical component of instantaneous values of supply voltages influences the currents and torque of the machine considerably. Its influence depends on the connection arrangements of the converter and the stator of a five-phase induction machine. A voltage supply method that minimizes the unfavorable effects of the third space harmonic in five-phase machines is described.
