Aim Copper-61 (3.33 h) is one of the most promising non-conventional positron emitters with excellent imaging properties. However, its half-life and limited availability has been limiting exploration of its potential. We have, therefore, investigated some aspects of its routine cyclotron production via deuteron induced reactions on natural nickel. Materials and Methods High purity thick nickel targets (60 um and 1 mm) were irradiated on external cyclotron deuteron beam of energy varying between 10.6 and 7.5 MeV. After the end of bombardment (EOB), the targets were dismounted, dissolved in 37% hydrochloric acid with 30% hydrogen peroxide and the product was separated from the target matrix via ion-exchange chromatography from HCl adjusted to 8M. In the case of the 1mm thick target, only the thickness corresponding to degrading the beam energy up to the reaction threshold (2–3 MeV) was etched. Intact targets, etched targets and all the solutions from the separation process were measured using calibrated gamma spectrometer equipped with HPGe detector. Evaluated data allowed for estimating achievable activity, radionuclidic purity and separation efficiency of the produced 61Cu.
