The authors suggest that the functioning of common and small molecules with enzymatic activities, such as iNOS, arginase, HO-1 or IDO, the bioavailability of their suibstrates (L-arginin, tryptophan) and the action of their small gaseous products (NO, CO) can be the ultimate mechanisms responsible for the effector immune reactios. Thus, in spite of the high immunological specificity of the immune system, the small and common molecules are the important effector players ensuring the specidfic immune reactions.
