1,14-Diaza[5]helicene can serve as a new, efficient MAILD matrix, outperforming other bases such as DMAN, and is highly suitable for high-throughput metabolomics analysis. Superiority of this compound stemmed from the constructive interplay of its high basicity, ability to absorb energy of UV-light laser pulses, and resistance to fragmentation and desorption. Experimental and computational data led us to discover a rationale for the ionisation processprocess: there is a correlation between the basicity (and proton-sponge character) of matrices and their efficacy in MAILD-MS.
