Magnetohydrodynamic activity is one of the most important limiting factors in achieving high plasma performance in present tokamaks. A broad experimental evidence of neoclassical tearing modes (NTM) on the COMPASS tokamak is reviewed in the contribution. Plasma performance of discharges with dominating and suppressed MHD activity, including the effect of NBI heating, is compared showing different radial energy and particle outfluxes. Signals of magnetic diagnostics are analyzed in time by Fast Fourier Transform, and in space by the correlation technique. Growth parameters of magnetic islands are derived. Mode locking of the island resulting in disruption behaviour is demonstrated as well as the effect of island healing by plasma current or auxiliary heating changes. Also, a connection of the magnetic islands rotation with periodic modifications of edge plasma density is introduced.
