Analysis of micronuclei (MN) is a commonly used method with wide applications. As a consequence there has been a strong interest in developing automated systems to score MN, a biomarker of chromosome breakage or loss, in mammalian and human cells. The review indentifies recent progress, important limitations and steps that need to be taken into account to enable the successful universal implementation of automated micronucleus assays by image cytometry.
