Nanoscale zero-valent iron and ferrates introduced their unique properties and effect in various industrial applications. First applications tend to appear recently in water and wastewater management. Our hypothesis led to the nZVI and ferrate application at the tertiary treatment of the municipal wastewater treatment plants in order to process combine effect of phosphorus removal with removal of bacteria and micropollutants. We carried out laboratory and kinetic batch tests to confirm out hypotheses. We achieved removal of estrogens ranging from 85 to 94 %, total phosphorus removal > 95 % and significant removal of bacteria. Ecotoxicological tests with Daphnia magna, Sinapis alba and Pseudokirchnella subcapitata did not show detrimental effect of observed materials. Furthermore, the application of iron nanoparticles led to the improvement of ecotoxicological properties of tested water. Further tests will be focused on the mechanism detections and on the full-scale applications.
