The article shows, using new methodology, that the male gene pool of the sedentary farmers and nomadic pastoralists harbors signatures of multiple and differentiated contributions from different genetic sources. Even if the Fulani pastoralists share with their neighboring farmers several Y chromosome sub-haplogroups, they have been drawn in differentiated places at different times. The role different demographic history and displacements of the Sahelian populations is highlighted. Moreover, the Fulani pastoralists from Niger are characterized by high presence of R1b-M343, which is represented in our dataset exclusively in the Fulani people and infers a north-to-south pastoralist migration route during a recent past.
