Metagenomic libraries were constructed from soil DNA representing a heavily polluted with petroleum hydrocarbons area. PCR screening approach allowed to identify 50% of all metagenomic clones as carrying EXDO-encoding genes of three major known phylogenetic groups described in cultured bacterial degraders. Unclassified clones were analyzed by transposon mutagenesis and pyrosequencing, and uncommon for the classical catabolic pathways organization - from solitary localization to multiple arrays of xenologous genes, was found.
