Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) refer to two chronic disorders that are manifested by intestinal inflammation: ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. One of the promising approaches in the therapy of IBD is administration of butyrate, an energy source for colonocytes, into the lumen of the colon. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of butyrate producing bacterium Clostridium (C.) tyrobutyricum on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) induced colitis in mice. Two-month-old immunocompetent BALB/c and immunodeficient SCID mice reared in specific-pathogen-free conditions were treated intrarectally with live C. tyrobutyricum one week prior to the induction of DSS colitis and during oral DSS treatment. Clinical symptoms as changes in body weight, bleeding and rectal prolapse were evaluated
