Ferromagnetic solids with small magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy and large magnetostriction exhibit the so-called "DELTA E" - effect. This effect is based on the contribution of the magnetostriction to the strains of the material under external mechanical loads. At the micro-scale, this contribution is provided by the rotation of the magnetization vectors in the lattice, and is, thus, closely related to the magnetic microstructure of the particular material. The present study analyzes this efect in the Ni-Mn-Ga ferromagnetic shape memory alloy, in which the fine magnetic microstructure is induced by pinning of magnetic domain walls on a dense net of anti-phase boundaries (APBs).
