During the last decade growing interest in steam thermal plasmas has been observed especially in the environmental area. Indeed, this kind of plasma can provide the process with reactive hydrogen and oxygen, which facilitate chemical reactions. Moreover, these plasmas are characterized by high temperatures, enthalpies and heat transfer capabilities. These features make the steam thermal plasma especially attractive for gasification of organic substances particularly for decomposition of waste and dangerous materials. The present paper is devoted to experimental investigation of the gasification process in steam plasma generated by water stabilized torch with Gerdien arc. The paper describes properties of the plasma generator, analyzes their effect on decomposition process and describes some results obtained on the experimental plasma reactor PLASGAS.
