The book summarizes the latest discoveries, from basic to clinical science, regarding the main roles of astrocytes under physiological and pathological circumstances. In this chapter we focus on summarizing current knowledge about the expression and functioning of K+ channels in astrocytes during the acute and chronic stages of CNS disorders, such as ischemia or epilepsy. The role of other proteins that might functionally interact with K+ channels and influence K+ buffering during CNS disorders, namely aquaporins and connexins, is also discussed.
