This paper deals with the primary form of the question of universals, as it was formulated in the 11th century, chiefly in connection with reading of Boëthius' commentaries to Aristotle's Categories and to Porphyry's Introduction to Aristotle’s Categories. "Modern" dialecticians of that time (e.g. John the Sophist or John Roscellinus of Compiègne) interpreted logic as an art having its subject in voce, therefore established an early medieval nominalist position in the debate on universals called "vocalism". The dispute over universals underwent a reformulation of the key question in the 11th century when Anselm of Canterbury reacted to Roscellinus' statements, and the debate on universals became a metaphysical topic too.
