Using rat liver epithelial cell line WB-F344 and assessment of gap junctional intercellular communication, it has been demonstrated that cyanobacterial extracts significantlly potentiated tumor promotional effects of common anthropogenic environmental contaminants, fluoranthene and polychlorinated biphenyl PCB153. This indicates possible synergistic pro-carcinogenic effects and interactions between different groups of environmental pollutants.
