Chiral capillary electrophoresis with highly sulphated cyclodextrins-based stereoselectors has been applied to monitor racemization pathway of novel helical dications – helquats, including isolation of the stable saddle-shaped intermediate. In conjunction with spectral methods (NMR, X-ray crystallography, CD) and ab-initio calculations, individual species were characterized in detail and a mechanism of the stereocontrolled interconversion process was documented.
