Changes in photoperiod modulate the central circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) as well as the peripheral clocks. The peripheral clocks are also entrained by feeding regime. The data demonstrate that adjustment of clock gene expression profiles in the rostral, middle and caudal SCN to the change from short to long photoperiod proceeds within 5 days and is not affected by changes in the feeding regime. Moreover, the photoperiod-modulated SCN affects waveform of gene expression profiles in the hepatic peripheral clock by food-independent signals
