Due to climatic changes and increasing drought occurrence, future outbreaks of spruce bark beetles (Ips shangrila and Ips nitidus) in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau will probably occur. New semiochemical based bark beetle population management technologies could help to decrease their impacts. In order to achieve sufficient efficacy in forest protection, more field trapping experiments on fully establishing the active components, optimal component ratios, release rates, and dispenser technology are surely needed.
