Hybridisation is a very frequent phenomenon among the European gudgeons. Despite that identification in the field, especially of smaller individuals (< 50 mm SL) is considered rather difficult, several morphological characters allow distinction between “pure” Gobio or Romanogobio species and their hybrids. Probably the most striking is colour pattern on the caudal fin – in hybrids the fin is usually notably spotted (similarly to Gobio spp.), but the spots are regularly arranged, forming nearly V-shaped pattern (unique to Romanogobio spp.). Epidermal crest on the dorsal scales, characteristic to Romanogobio, in hybrids is usually absent or restricted only to mid-dorsal line of scales. Also the shape of the body is mediate – more slender than in Gobio, but notably deeper than in Romanogobio. In very small individuals the most effective character is the position of a dark blotch on the dorsum.
