Application of curvilinear elements in finite element methods is presented and discussed. It is shown that introduction of such elements in domains with curvilinear boundaries leads to substantial reduction of the number of degrees of freedom of the task compared with classical triangular or quadrangular elements, while the accuracy of results is even better. Their usage is illustrated by a typical example solved by a higher-order finite element method implemented in own codes Hermes2D and Agros2D.
