Bez nadsázky můžeme konstatovat, že se pylová analýza v průběhu necelých sta let svojí existence postupně rozvinula v plnohodnotnou archeologickou metodu. S její pomocí totiž dokážeme zachytit takové aspekty minulé skutečnosti, jaké jsou tradiční, na artefakty orientované archeologii zcela nedostupné. Vegetace, jejíž více nebo méně věrným obrazem jsou soubory pylových zrn nalézané v sedimentech, totiž mnohdy citlivě reaguje na rozmanité lidské aktivity. Díky tomu můžeme studovat vzájemnou souhru kulturních a přírodních procesů v krajině, a to často do nečekaných podrobností. Nespornou výhodou pylové analýzy ve vztahu k archeologii je její nezávislost na archeologických nálezových situacích. Pylový záznam většinou zůstává nepřerušený dokonce i v obdobích, kdy člověk konkrétní krajinu opustil a ponechal ji čistě přírodnímu vývoji.

Even from a single pollen spectrum we can learn much about the ratio of forested to unforested land, the composition of forest stands, the presence of settlements, fields, meadows and pastures, cultivated crops, etc. Thanks to this we can study the interplay of cultural and natural processes in the landscape, often in surprising detail. However, the method's potential becomes fully apparent with the discovery of an unbroken record in the form of stratified sediments with preserved pollen grains – a "natural archive" that formed layer after layer over a sufficiently long period of time, allowing us to capture the development of a specific cultural landscape in an uninterrupted time sequence lasting perhaps thousands of years.
