Mechanism of twinning in NiMnGa has been investigated by in-situ straining in a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Detwinning processes are observed during the tensile tests of samples of self-accommodated tetragonal martensite. The more favorable martensite variants replace the less favorable ones. The process occurs via movement of twinning dislocations that nucleate in the boundaries between individual twinned regions. The dislocations glide along {101} planes, their Burgers vector is of [101] type.
