In this paper, the normal contact vector is computed by minimum distance problem between a point and a surface of quadratic element. This formulation yields system of two nonlinear equations. Methods for unconstrained optimization, particularly the Newton-Raphson method, the steepest descent method, Broyden's method and the BFGS method, are employed. Efficiency of the methods is compared by means of a numerical example consists of a contact-impact problem of two colliding thick plates.
