Interindividual differences in DNA repair capacity (DRC) represent an important source of variability in genome integrity and thus influence health risk. DRC represents as well a potential biomarker in cancer prediction. The ultimate goal of our study was to obtain reference data from cancer-free population, e.g. background level for further investigations on cancer patients. Endogenous damage and DRC, specific for nucleotide excision repair (NER), was evaluated using modified comet assay and using challenge assay, genetic polymorphisms in NER genes were assessed as well. DNA damage and DRC exerted substantial interindividual variability, were associated with several confounders and modulated by particular genotypes of NER genes.
