Comparative studies of effects of two compounds – tebufenozide (an ecdysone agonist) and lufenuron (an insect growth regulator inhibiting chitin synthesis) – were conducted in Spodoptera littoralis. The compounds, orally administered, caused larval mortality proportional to their concentration in its food. Tebufenozide initiated precocious molt and lufenuron on the other hand inhibited synthesis of chitin. In both cases, larvae were unable to complete the molting process and died in the old larval cuticle. Lufenuron is more active than is tebufenozide. Topical application of the tested compounds to eggs caused dose- and age-dependent inhibition of embryonic development. Application of tebufenozide in the second half of embryogenesis caused precocious molt of eclosed larvae of the 1st instar. Some morphological changes in the process of pupation were also observed. Tested compounds also reduced reproduction of adults treated in the larval stage.
