Viaceré druhy aktinobaktérií patriacich do rodu Rhodococcus sú známe pre svoju schopnosť degradovať rozne aromatické látky, ktoré sú pre vačšinu živých organizmov toxické.
Genes involved in degradation of phenol were analyzed in various strains of the genus Rhodococcus. Expression of the phe and cat genes was found to be induced by phenol. Binding of regulatory CRP protein to the promoter regions of the phe and cat operons was observed
