In the beginning of the 20th century, the grey partridge used to be a common species in the Czech Republic as well as in the whole Europe. However, a number of factors have contributed to its dramatic decline, particulrly agriculture intensification. Nowaday, the species has fragmented population in our country and it is supposed that the species experienced bottleneck. Therefore, partridge is at a high risk of extinction because of the loss of the genetic diversity. Although there were attempts to reintroduce captive partridges for the stabilization of wild populations most of such attempts were not successful. It may be explained by the fact that conditions influencing survival may differ in men-kept and wild partridges. The survival probability may be dependent on the condition quality, while condition-dependent traits (melanin-based and carotenoid-based ornaments) may be indicators of the health state. The aim of our study is to compare conditatin traits of captive, recent natural and historical populations of the grey partridge. Results of our studies can inform about the potential for recovery of the species in our country.
