The article presents a new phonematic analysis of present standard Czech, based on the principles of functional phonology as developed by Andre Martinet and Jan Mulder. It argues why the so-called affricates should be interpreted as two-phoneme combinations. Moreover, it discusses contexts where oppositions between phonemes are neutralized and sets up a sub-system of archiphonemes.
