In any data assimilation method aimed at inverse modeling of emissions, a natural question is raised on interpretation of the results. If a top-down emission inventory or emission model is changed by the inversion procedure, validation has to be performed in order to make sure that the procedure doesn't correct other errors in the model than those attributable to emissions (i.e. model bias, errors of meteorological inputs etc.). To assess the performance of a 4DVar inversion modeling procedure, we perform an experiment with an emission model based on the rough EMEP inventory (horizontal resolution 50 km). We run an inverse modeling procedure and evaluate the direction of changes in the emission model. We then compare the results with a newer inventory. In this way advantages and limitations of the procedure may be inferred.
