    The paper deals with the preparation and characterization of optical chemical microsensors. It starts with examples of results achieved at the Institute in the area of bent fibers, microstructure fibers, sensors with surface plasmons and sensing fibers with porous detection layers. Then novel sensing structures based on fiber tapers, optical nanoparticles and whispering-gallery mode microresonators are discussed which can be used mainly for biosensing.
