Own investigations by means of micro and nano indentation techniques and results in literature, dealing with the local mechanical behaviour within welded joints (PA6, PP, PE, PVC) and weld lines (PP, PC, PS) of amorphous and semicrystalline polymers have been summarized. For amorphous polymers, minimum of hardness and indentation modulus in the joint or no change in the properties have been found, whereas, for semicrystalline polymers, hardness and indentation modulus mostly pass through a maximum in the weld line, the welded joint or the heat affected zones.
